Understanding Bronchitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Natural Remedies

Posted by Kathleen Flanagan on

Bronchitis is a respiratory condition characterized by short-term or long-term swelling of the mucous membranes of the lungs. Acute bronchitis involves a cough with sputum, fever, enlarged mucus-secreting structures, and back pain. It is often caused by viral infections like measles and whooping cough. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is marked by prolonged mucus release in the bronchi, lasting at least 3 months for at least 2 years. Smoking, air pollution, long-term infections, and abnormal bronchi growth are common factors.

Clinical Features

Bronchitis leads to inflammation or obstruction of the bronchi, causing symptoms like coughing, expectoration, fever, back and chest pain, sore throat, and breathing difficulties. Acute bronchitis can follow upper respiratory tract infections and may lead to pneumonia, especially in infants.

Chronic bronchitis results from frequent lung irritation and may be linked to allergies, with cigarette smoking and coexisting emphysema as common factors.

Aromatherapy Treatment

Aromatherapy focuses on combating infections, reducing fever, easing coughs, and expelling mucus. Steam inhalation is recommended for dry and painful coughs. In later stages, clearing mucus from the lungs is crucial. Maintaining warmth, avoiding irritants like smoke, ensuring humidity, and using essential oils like eucalyptus aid in recovery.

Other Treatments

  • Daily intake of 3,000-10,000 mg of vitamin C with bioflavonoids
  • Herbs for acute bronchitis: echinacea, licorice root, white horehound, marshmallow, thyme, and ginger
  • Herbs for chronic bronchitis: sundew, licorice root, echinacea, ginger, and golden seal
  • Adding moisture to the air and staying hydrated
  • Smoking cessation for chronic bronchitis sufferers

Metaphysical Cause

Bronchitis may have metaphysical causes related to an inflamed family environment, including arguments, yelling, and emotional fluctuations.
