Navigating Asthma: Unveiling Causes, Symptoms, and Holistic Approaches

Posted by Kathleen Flanagan on

Asthma is a respiratory ailment characterized by recurring episodes of breathing difficulty, wheezing, coughing, and the presence of thick mucus in the lungs. These episodes can be triggered by various factors such as exposure to allergens, pollutants, infections, intense exercise, or emotional stress. Effective treatment involves addressing the root cause, if possible. Additionally, bronchodilator sprays, oral bronchodilators, and steroid medications are commonly used. Prolonged and recurrent attacks may lead to complications like shortness of breath and permanent obstructive lung disease, such as emphysema.

Clinical Features

Asthma manifests as the reversible narrowing of small air tubes (bronchioles), attributed to inflammation of mucous membranes or contraction of diaphragmatic muscular walls. Common symptoms include difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, prolonged expiration phase, wheezing, and coughing caused by excessive mucus.

Aetiology

Asthma's origins can be traced to a variety of sources, including:
  • Inhaled Allergens: House dust mites, animal dander, and irritant gases like cigarette smoke.
  • Ingested Allergens: Foods, drugs (e.g., aspirin), food additives, yeasts, and molds.
  • Infectious Organisms: Infections or allergies to the organisms themselves.
  • Environmental Factors: Temperature changes, weather fluctuations, and exposure to cold air.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Lack of exercise, emotional stress, certain workplace chemicals.

    Aromatherapy Treatment

During an asthma crisis, inhaling essential oils with antispasmodic properties can provide relief. Avoid steam inhalation, as it may exacerbate inflammation. Instead, use a humidifier with essential oils. Between attacks, massage the thoracic area and practice techniques that open the chest and shoulders.

      Other Treatments

      • Identify and avoid food sensitivities triggering asthma attacks.
      • Consider Vitamin B12 supplementation for sulphite-sensitive individuals.
      • Eliminate food colorings, especially tartrazine if sensitive to aspirin.
      • Efficient allergen avoidance, keeping the environment dust-free.
      • Avoiding cold fluids, reducing exposure to smoke and pollutants.
      • Maintaining a comfortable bedroom temperature to prevent airway cooling.

      Holistic Approaches

      • Regular consumption of garlic to stimulate the immune system.
      • Supplementing the diet with essential fatty acids or taking linseed and cod liver oil.
      • Boosting immunity with antioxidant nutrients, zinc, and vitamin B6.
      • Incorporating relaxation and breathing exercises into daily routines.

      Corticosteroids and Alternative Remedies

Corticosteroids remain conventional in allopathic asthma treatment. Glycyrrhizin in licorice root exhibits steroid-like activity, acting as an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic agent. Acupressure, particularly on Lung 1 and Kidney 27 points, can alleviate acute asthmatic symptoms.

      Metaphysical Cause

In a metaphysical context, asthma may be linked to an inability to breathe for oneself, feelings of being stifled, suppressed crying, and smothering/attachment-type love. Addressing these emotional aspects can contribute to a comprehensive approach to asthma management.
