Essential Oils Used in Treating Migraine Headaches

Case Study Using Essential Oils for Migraine Headaches
Lavender Therapeutic Oil

Ms. A. had a long hisยญtory of migraine. She was referred to me after havยญing tried most of the prepaยญraยญtions availยญable in herbal shops, as well as alloยญpathic medยญicaยญtion. It has been decided to try aroยญmatic medicine.

I started by findยญing out as much of her medยญical hisยญtory as posยญsiยญble in order to define the type of migraine she was expeยญriยญencยญing. It has been diagยญnosed as a non-digestive, vasยญcuยญlar migraine.

We started with a look at her diet in order to idenยญtify and elimยญiยญnate those foods which may have been conยญtributยญing to or aggraยญvatยญing her migraines. With a new dietary regime in place, the next step was to decide on the best essenยญtial oil forยญmula for Ms. A.

Introducing Essential Oils

We started with a 1% diluยญtion of roseยญmary [officยญiยญnalis, ct. Cineยญol with 2% ginยญger and 1% sweet marยญjoยญram. This blend was applied to the neck and shoulยญders in a masยญsage cream base. The methยญods of use and appliยญcaยญtion sequence were taught to Ms. Aโ€™s partยญner, and a furยญther appointยญment was made for one monthโ€™s time.

After a month, she appeared in the clinic and said that there had been very litยญtle improveยญment. I decided to change the forยญmula slightly and also to increase the appliยญcaยญtions to three masยญsage appliยญcaยญtions per week, plus an addiยญtional appliยญcaยญtion on or about the time of an attack. I gave Ms. A. a chart to fill in which monยญiยญtored the freยญquency of her migraines and plotยญted any progress graphยญiยญcally. Such charts can be an invaluยญable way of demonยญstratยญing improveยญments; so often the patient only rememยญbers the bad days and does not regยญisยญter the good ones. Again, appointยญment was given for a monthโ€™s time.

Ms. A. had been conยญsisยญtent in fillยญing in her chart. She said she had noticed a few good days but nothยญing too wonยญderยญful. At this meetยญing, I decided to keep to the curยญrent oil forยญmula and allow another month to see if there would be any difยญferยญence in the chart. One month on, Ms. A. appeared again and her chart was much improved. She said the chart had been a great value in enabling her to observe the slight improveยญments which she had preยญviยญously been unable to see.

Six months later, the freยญquency of migraine attacks has been reduced to one per 14 days. This is acknowlยญedged as a great improveยญment. Part of the ongoยญing treatยญment will be to monยญiยญtor the essenยญtial oil forยญmula and adjust it when necยญesยญsary to changยญing needs of Ms. A.

We have now decided to decrease the freยญquency of masยญsage to one appliยญcaยญtion per week and have found that the improveยญment in Ms. A. has been mainยญtained. The masยญsage forยญmula is at the same diluยญtion but I have replaced the ginยญger with Eucaยญlypยญtus smythii.

I am sure that the masยญsage itself has had as benยญeยญfiยญcial an effect as the essenยญtial oil treatment.

The good news is that Ms. A.โ€˜s qualยญity of life has greatly improved. She is still receivยญing alloยญpathic treatยญment and I am workยญing closely with the conยญsulยญtant in this field โ€” a truly comยญpliยญmenยญtary approach.
