Natural Menopause Relief: Aromatherapy and Dietary Strategies

Posted by Kathleen Flanagan on

Menopause is a transformative phase when the ovaries cease to produce oestrogens and progesterone. For those seeking alternatives to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), a combination of appropriate dietary advice and aromatherapy treatments can offer a path through the menopausal years without severe discomfort.

Essential oils, also known as ethereal oils, are volatile and aromatic plant essences with medicinal and therapeutic effects. While definitions may vary, these oils play essential roles within plants, such as favoring pollination, protecting against bacterial aggression, and attracting friendly insects.

Understanding the roles of progesterone and oestrogen is crucial during menopause. Progesterone, present in wild yams, offers various benefits, including increased libido, prevention of uterine cancer, and support for bone health. On the other hand, oestrogen, while essential, comes with effects such as decreased libido and increased risk of uterine cancers.

While essential oils with plant progesterones are yet to be discovered, certain oils like sage, clary sage, and fennel contain oestrogen-like molecules. Aromatherapy, leveraging the power of essential oils, can positively impact emotional equilibrium and alleviate common menopausal symptoms.

Here are some essential oil formulations that have proven effective for premenopausal and menopausal symptoms:

Circulation and Diuresis Blend:

  • 4 drops of roman chamomile
  • 4 drops of spike lavender
  • 4 drops of true lavender
  • 2 drops of clary sage

Use this blend in the bath or as a massage oil to improve circulation and reduce irritability associated with the lack of oestrogens and progesterone.

Cooling Hot Flashes Blend:

  • 3 drops of bergamot
  • 2 drops of myrrh
  • 2 drops of ylang ylang
  • 4 drops of sweet fennel
  • 4 drops of geranium

Create a massage oil with this blend to provide relief on days when hot flashes are particularly challenging.

Stress Relief Blend:

  • 4 drops of black spruce
  • 4 drops of atlas cedarwood
  • 5 drops of ylang ylang
  • 3 drops of sandalwood

Add this blend to hazelnut oil for a strengthening and comforting massage oil or diffuser blend.

These formulations should be used in an alternating weekly pattern, complementing the client's personalized blend for home use between treatments.

In addition to aromatherapy, managing menopause should include dietary supplements such as wild yam, fresh fennel, fresh celery, and fresh spinach leaves. Incorporate these into a salad with added pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds for enhanced health and well-being.

Opt for a holistic approach to menopause relief, embracing the power of aromatherapy and dietary choices. By doing so, women can navigate this transformative phase with greater ease and improved overall health.
