When “Fine” Isn’t Fine: Healing a Nervous System That Won’t Slow Down

You know the feeling. You get through the to-do list, the meetings, the emails, the version of yourself everyone needs you to be and then you sit down for one quiet moment and your whole body is still buzzing. Your mind won’t stop running. Your shoulders are somewhere up around your ears and you didn’t even notice until now.

If you asked how you’re doing, you’d probably say “fine.” You’re high-functioning. You handle things. That’s exactly the problem.

For years, I was the version of “fine” that was quietly falling apart. I pushed through migraines and sinus infections that never really went away, because stopping wasn’t an option, not when there was so much to carry. I suffered in silence, the way so many of us do, because our silence looks like strength from the outside.

What I didn’t understand yet was that my body wasn’t malfunctioning. It was responding to years of running on high alert, saying yes when I meant no, and mistaking exhaustion for productivity. A nervous system that never gets to rest doesn’t just feel tired. It forgets how to feel safe.

This is the part most high-achieving women get stuck on: you can’t think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. You already know the breathing exercises. You’ve read the articles. Knowing what to do and being able to access it in your body are two different things especially when your system has been stuck in “go” for so long that “go” feels like home.

Healing has to happen somewhere your mind can’t out-argue in the body, in the breath, in the senses.

This is why scent has become one of the quietest, most powerful tools in my own healing and why I built Awakening Spirit around it. Essential oils don’t ask your mind to cooperate. A single inhale reaches the part of your brain that governs emotion and memory before your thoughts even catch up. It’s one of the fastest ways to say to your body, gently: you’re safe now. You can stand down.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. One drop of lavender on your wrists before a hard conversation. A few minutes with a diffuser and your eyes closed before the day demands anything of you. A single, small ritual, repeated, until your body starts to believe it.

If this is landing somewhere in you, I want you to hear this clearly: your exhaustion is not a personal failing, and your healing doesn’t require you to have it all figured out first. It starts with one honest breath, and the willingness to stop proving you’re fine.
